Parks & Recreation

Brandon is known for its many beautiful and well kept state parks.  One of the most notable of these is the Big Sioux Recreation Area, which lies on the banks of South Dakota's Big Sioux River.  It was formed by the debris of melting glaciers, making the hills bordering the Big Sioux River into a unique hiking area. The park features over seven miles of trail, including opportunities for archery, biking, cross-country skiing, disc golf and hiking. The Big Sioux River offers an ideal waterway for canoeing and kayaking that was once used extensively by American Indians and fur traders. Another noteable area is the Beaver Creek Nature area, which was developed to increase environmental awareness in visitors and highlights natural and historical resources in the vicinity. Every year, the park hosts the Homesteader Day Harvest Festival. Held the Sunday after Labor Day, the event attracts thousands of visitors of all ages who want a taste of homestead life and living history.
