Harrisburg is a city in Lincoln County and is considered a suburb of Sioux Falls. The population has surged recently, growing from a meager 958 residents at the 2000 census to 4,270 residents at the 2008 census. The number of residents living within the Harrisburg zip code has grown from 2,476 people in 2000 to 10,815 in 2007.
Prior to the construction of the railroad line through Lincoln County, the mail was carried by stage coach to the Harris Homestead on Nine Mile Creek in Dayton Township to a post office named Harrisburg. In 1878 a railroad was completed that connected Sioux City, Iowa to Sioux Falls, South Dakota and the post office was moved to the Emory J. Darling Homestead just one mile south of the current site of the city of Harrisburg. In 1890, the post office was moved to its present site and the town of Harrisburg was established.
Some of the early merchants to move to the area were Mulinger and Kehm Lumber and Hardware who began business here in 1892. Later a telegram machine was installed in the hardware store. The first grocery store opened here around the same time, and the Harrisburg State Bank was organized in 1900 by W.H. Wasem. The first rural mail route for the patrons of the Harrisburg post office was developed in 1901.
The first fire department here was organized by A.L. Dodge on March 24, 1921. Five years later Ellis Larson, John Loberg, and Roy Gorton were selected to meet with the town board to purchase a new Chevrolet Chassie to be used as the town’s first fire truck. Today, the same Chassie continues to be the mascot of the fire department.
The first school building was built in Harrisburg in 1908 where the current school stands, and a new high school was added in 1973 that included a new gym, a resource center, a home economics department, and eight classrooms. Rural water became available to the town residents, and this pivotal step caused new residents to pour into the area as houses sprung up all over town. By 1979 the school was too small and six new elementary rooms were built to accommodate the influx of new students. The school system continues to grow and currently includes Liberty Elementary School, Harrisburg Middle School, Harrisburg High School and the Explorer Elementary School.
